English User Guide

  1. Undertake a pre-use visual inspection to ensure your CoverUp Key is in good condition and configured correctly before use. The interchangeable tips and retaining pin will eventually show signs of wear after repeated use. Replace these parts accordingly.

  2. Clear the area around the manhole. Move or avoid any potential trip hazards.

  3. Select the most suitable tip for the manhole you intend to free/lift. Secure the tip in place using the retaining pin.

  4. Insert the tip of the CoverUp Key into the key slot of the manhole. Turn the key 90 degrees to engage with the cover lid. Never lean or bend over the CoverUp Key to use it.

  5. Stand in front of the manhole with a naturally straight back and your legs parallel to your hips. Never stand on the manhole.

  6. When you are in the correct position, take a firm grip of both handles and lift quickly with an upward action using only your arms. The CoverUp Key works by exerting a hammer-like effect on the manhole from beneath.  Multiple repetitions may be required to release more resistant manholes.

  7. Use multiple, lighter efforts rather than trying to release a cover with a single effort.

  8. When the cover has been freed, use an alternative piece of equipment to manoeuvre the cover if it is too heavy to be moved using approved manual handling methods.

  9. Some covers will be too stuck to move. Do not overexert yourself and cause injury.

  10. Use the CoverUp Key in conjunction with your company’s working methods and Health & Safety guidelines.
